The help-function
TNTAV offers a very easy-to-use Help function, that can be activated at any time. d
To activate the Help function, simply press [F1]. A window containing the Help text will appear.
The Help function is context-sensitive, i.e., wherever the program is focused -- if an error has appeared or if a virus has been found, etc. -- the appropriate Help text will appear. So the Help function actively supports your work.
If the text does not fit into the Help window completely, you can move the area shown with the [
],[<-] and [->] keys (or you can use the mouse to move the sliders of the scroll bars). To scroll larger areas at once, use the [PgUp] and [PgDn] keys.
Some words appear in another color within the text (word or wort, for example). This indicates there is more information available for that specific topic. You can highlight one of these words with [Tab] or with [Shift]&[Tab]. If you press [Enter], you'll "go to" the highlighted topic.
This is all you need to know about working with the Help function. Now press [Tab] until ->using
TNTAV is highlighted and press [ENTER].
You have selected the first word. Now press [ENTER]
to get back to the first explanation.
You have selected the second word. Now press [ENTER]
to get back to the first explanation.
Not enough memory
Sometimes there may be not enough free memory, and there is no guarantee that all files can be displayed in the user interface.
Memory gets low if... {
(1) there is less than 512kB installed or
(2) TSR-programs are active or
(3) the program has been started from a shell
Check the above-mentioned circumstances to try to correct the problem and start TNTAV again. If this is not possible, you will have to use the batch mode instead. since the batch mode needs much less memory than the user interface.
Version expired
Check to see if the version of TNTAV that you are currently using is older than two months (the difference between the program date and the system date is more than 60 days). If so, there is a risk, because new viruses may not be detected. Be sure you are using the current release of the program. O
If you want to disable the warning, use the command line-parameter /NOEXPIRE.
Large Logfile
The Logfile has grown to the number of lines indicated in the dialogue. You should delete the Logfile from time to time, since it occupies space on your hard disk.
Virus found...
A virus has been found. You should restart the system now with a clean disk (e.g. the emergency disk that has been created by the Install program). Then test your hard disk and your floppies with TNTAV again.
The title "Filetags"
You will find two function under "Filetags."
The first function allows you to remove all tags at once, without going through all directories and files manually to untag them. D
The other function allows you to save the tags to the hard disk. This operation is accomplished automatically when you leave the program, so generally it is not necessary to actively save the tags. You can be sure that all tags have been saved after you have used this function, even if the power fails in the next second.
->back...
Information about File Tags
You can tag single files in the file window as well as complete directories in the directory window.
Tagged directories or files are identified by a point at their left side. Tagging has only one purpose: It is possible to test ONLY the tagged directories/files and leave the other ones untested.
To tag the currently highlighted directory or file, simply press [Enter] (the directory- or the file window has to be focused first). Alternatively, you can click with the right mouse button onto the desired directory/file. S
Taggings will stay where they are, even if the program is left and started again. #
The directory tags and the file tags do not depend on each other. If you tag some files in a directory, and then tag the complete directory afterwards, all files in that directory will be tagged. If you "untag" the directory, only the previously (separately) tagged files will stay tagged. k
If a complete directory is tagged, it is not possible to tag or untag individual files in that directory.
Tags have to be stored in memory. If you have many tagged files, less memory is available for storage on the drive. This can be a problem if you have a very large drive and many tagged files.

Checking
In general...
If you test a drive, TNTAV will search for viruses in the files on that drive. You can choose another drive with the menu function "drive." g
By default, only executable files will be examined. However, it is possible to search in all
files. }
TNTAV will not check the boot areas, only the files. If you want the boot areas checked, use the function Check|Bootsector.
Memory will be searched automatically at the start of the program for active viruses. You will receive a message, if a virus is found in the memory.
You can start checking through the menu using the space bar. The testing of a particular file or a directory(-tree) depends on whether the file window or the directory window has been focused when the space bar is pressed. O
You can also double click onto a file or onto a directory to start the test. <

Options for checking
This dialogue appears when you have activated the Check function. 8
The following are the possible parameters for testing: y
1 "Directory" or "File": This option depends on the position of the cursor at the time you activate the check function. V
2 "Logfile": This option determines if the results should be written into a logfile.
3 "Prompt if Virus": If a dialogue is displayed when a virus is found, the dialogue that appears gives a choice of how to react to the detection of the virus: For example, you can order TNTAV to remove the virus, or you can get an explanation of it, etc. If you turn the "Prompt" off, the dialogue will not appear. In either case, a small window displaying the name of the virus(es) will be shown on the screen, if a virus is found.
4 "Datafiles": This selection is designed to be used whether all files or only the executable files are be tested. Executable files are not only .COM and .EXE files, but also files with the extensions *.OVR, *.OVL, .APP and so on. Normally, it is alright to test just the executable files. However, if you turn on "All files," TNTAV will check every file in the area being checked, regardless of its extension. Selecting this option slows down scanning a little. >
5 "Subdirectories": If subdirectories should be tested, too.
->back
Check Current File
The current file will be shown highlighted in the file window. You can change the current file with the cursor keys or by clicking with the mouse. w
You can test the current file with the [Space]-key (make sure the file window is focused) or with Check|Current File.
->back
Checking directories
You can test multiple directories only if they are located in another directory that you wish to test. If this is not the case, you will have to test the directories separately. I
1 Focus the directory window (with [Tab]), if it is not already focused
2 Select the directory that includes all sub-directories you wish tested (instead of "navigating" to the directory you can also enter the name of the directory directly). 7
3 Press the space bar or choose Checking|Directories.
or
1,2,3 Double-click onto the directory
4 A dialogue appears. Choose the options (explanation of the dialog) and select <OK>.
->back
Checking the highlighted file
If you want to test a specific file, you have to highlight it first. You can change the highlighted file with the cursor keys (to perform a function in the file window, it has to be focused -- which means it has a double-frame. To focus it, press [Tab] until the window shows a double-frame). '
Choose Check|Current file afterwards. >
As an other alternative, you can double-click onto the file.
->back
Checking the boot areas
This functions allows you to check the boot areas. If you choose Check|Bootsector, TNTAV will test the boot areas and display the result of the test. You then have the opportunity to remove the virus or look it up in the database, if an infection is found.
->back
Checking the complete drive
To test a complete drive (a floppy, for example) you have to do following:
1 Select the drive that you wish to test. Use "Drive" ([Alt]&[D]) to focus the drive bar (if the drive is not the one already displayed). Enter the letter of the drive
or
1 Click onto the letter in the drive bar _
2 After the structure of the drive has been read in, its root directory will be highlighted. 7
3 Press the space bar or choose Checking|Directories.
or
1,2,3 Double-click onto the root directory (this is the directory in the first line of the directory window)
4 A dialogue appears. Choose the options you want (->explanation of the options...). Since you want to test all directories, set "Sub-directories" to "Yes". Select <OK>.
TNTAV will search the directory for viruses. After testing is complete, you will get data indicating the results. The dialogue showing the result will appear in red, if viruses have been found. @
5 Choose Check|Bootsector to test the boot areas of the drive.
->back
The function "logfile"
The logfile is the file where the results of testing will be saved. The file is named "TNTAV.LOG" and will be created in the currently- active directory (not in the TNTAV directory, if you are not in that directory).
The menu functions under "Logfile" can be selected only if a logfile exists. If you turn the option "Logfile" in the dialogue that appears before the start of checking to "on," the logfile will be created.
A window showing the contents of the logfile will appear, if you choose Logfile|Show. You can move and size, scroll the contents and close it as usual. w
If you choose Logfile|Print, only the text in the logfile itself will be transferred to the printer. TNTAV will not add any control codes, so you have to setup your printer for the correct font (Courier 12 fits best), page-length and so on. No form feeds will be added (you cannot print the logfile with this function on a postscript printer without an additional program). x
If TNTAV does not recognize that your printer is out of paper, the paper-out sensor on the printer may not be enabled.
If you choose the function Logfile|Delete, the file TNTAV.LOG will be deleted. The next time you turn on the logfile, a new file will be created and the new information will be at the beginning of the new file.

Virus found in memory
A virus has been found in memory.
There is no danger if the virus "is of no harm"/ "has been deactivated." But you should test all hard disks/ partitions/ diskettes to make sure that no files are infected!
If the virus could not be deactivated, boot from a clean disk (the emergency disk) now! You'll find further information in the manual.
No bootvirus found
No bootvirus have been found on the current drive.
BUT: This test does not tell you if there are any viruses hiding in files on the drive. You have to run the normal tests, too! {
Press [Enter] now, if you need an explanation of how to test the complete
drive, or press [Esc] to close the help window.
Bootvirus found
A bootvirus was found in the boot areas of the current drive. You can now...
1 Get an explanation of the virus (if it is in the database) 2 Try to remove the virus 3 Cancel the operation WITHOUT removing the virus ?
ATTENTION: Make a backup before you try to remove the virus!
Repair bootsektor: Result:
If you get an "OK" message, the virus has been removed and there is no danger anymore. H
Some viruses cannot be removed. The dialogue will tell you the reason.
Repair bootsector
It is possible that in some rare cases (e.g. when a bootvirus has done some tricky things with the partition data) the drive can no longer be accessed after the repair. In this case, the drive has to be reformatted. Therefore, this function is critical. >
You should use this function only if you have made a backup!
If you have not made a backup, <Cancel> the function now and make a backup (e.g. with MS-DOS BACKUP). Try to repair the bootsector after the backup is done.
Checking Done - Results
This dialogue shows the results of testing. It will appear in RED if viruses have been found. 2
The dialogue displays the following information:
1 The name of the tested directory (or the file, if only one file has been tested). If more than one directory has been tested, this is the name of the top-most directory, the one that contains the other sub-directories.
2 The number of processed files. This is not the same as (3). Normally only the executable files are checked for viruses, because viruses cannot be activated in data files. This is the number of files that have been looked at. f
3 This is the number of files tested or the number of executable files that could contains viruses.
4 This is the number of infected files. If you find a value different from zero here, your drive is infected. In this case, the dialogue will be displayed in red to indicate this information to the user. The names of the viruses that have been found will be displayed in a separate window displayed "behind" the dialogue (you will see it if you close the dialogue). If viruses have been found, this dialogue will also show the number of files that have been repaired. (
5 The time used for the test function.
6 The number of files that have been processed per minute. If testing took less than a minute, this value will be calculated on the basis on 1/100 seconds.
->back...
Checksums/Filesizes wrong
Tagged files will not only be checked for viruses, but also for their filesizes and checksums.
A different filesize/checksum could indicate an (up to now) unknown virus. Some programs change their files themselves (e.g. to store setup-information), so it is possible that the checksum/filesize- values have changed without a virus. w
Use the "try-mode" to find out if there are any similarities between the suspicious file and other files on the disk.
Some files could not be accessed
Some files could not be accessed and therefore could not tested. The reasons could be:
1 the files have been locked out by the network software. Some system files in a network cannot be accessed, even if the user is the supervisor. f
2 the files are in use by another program; for example, in a multi-tasking environment like windows.
Stop testing
Choose <Yes> to abort the function or <No> to continue testing.
->back...
Logfile does not exist
The logfile does not exist. Either this drive has not been tested yet, or the option "logfile" was not activated during a previous test.
Another reason for the "Logfile does not exist" message might be that you have chosen a new name for the logfile with the /REPORT_ option.

Using TNTAV
The user interface of TNTAV has a SAA-like concept. The interface offers an ease of use and can be operated intuitively. Most of the functions can be reached directly through a combination of [Alt] and a letter (see Functions
keys). 7
The interface is separated into four different areas: ?
The menu
The drive-bar
The work-area
The help-line
Not enough memory
There is not enough memory to add further files/directories. Please start TNTAV directly from DOS and remove all TSR programs that are not absolutely necessary.
Move/Resize
You can move and resize windows via the keyboard with this function, although it easier with a mouse.
The [
],[<-] and [->] keys can be used to move the currently- focused window around in the working area. Press one of these keys together with [Shift], and you'll change the size of the window. q
Press [Enter] to leave the window in the new size/position, or press [Esc] to restore it to its original state.
->back
Close window
You can select this function only if the currently focused window can be closed. The directory window and the file window can, for example, not be closed. Windows that can be closed are the virus-alert window and the log window. Closing a window does not affect its contents.
Selecting another drive
This function allows you to select another drive to test. After you have selected "drive," you can choose another drive by entering the corresponding letter. You can also select the letter with the [->] and [<-] keys or by clicking it (in the drive-bar) with a mouse.
If you have chosen a different drive, all file tags (if there are some) will be saved to the current drive before switching to the new one. r
The directory of the new drive will be scanned, and the file window and directory window will show the new data.

The menu
In the pull-down menu of TNTAV, all functions are ordered under a common title. For example, all functions that have to do with testing are arranged under the title "Check."
You can focus the menu by pressing [F10]. Once the menu is focused, all keyboard-entries affect the menu. You will notice that after pressing [F10] one of the titles becomes highlighted. You can change the title that is highlighted with the [<-] and [->] keys.
If you press [Enter], a menu will pull down under the currently highlighted title. It contains all functions grouped under the topic shown in the title. You can move the highlight in this list with the [
] and [
] keys.
Some of the characters in the menu are shown in another color. These are the hot keys. You can use them to access an item faster than moving to it with the arrow keys. Simply press the hot key, if the menu is focused, to access an item.
